PopEye Gallery proudly presents new work by Joseph Karlovec in our first exhibition of 2017. Karlovec earned his MFA in Painting & Drawing from Kent State University in 2015, after receiving his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2009. His award-winning work has been exhibited throughout Ohio and beyond, including solo shows in Akron, Kent and Southfield, MI. His awards include Best of Show in AGORA X at Junctionview Studios in Columbus in 2013 and First Place in the 66th Annual Members’ Exhibition at the Springfield Museum of Art in 2012. In 2016, Karlovec’s work was featured in Studio Visit Magazine (Volume 32).
Impulse Painting is the first exhibition of Karlovec’s latest abstract paintings, all created during the past year. These new works represent an evolution in the artist’s studio practice, allowing him to act by “impulse” rather than from an observed reference or preconceived concept.
“My practice is an exploration of color and rhythm that stems from the visual language of Modernist painting,” Karlovec says. “There’s an immediacy associated with abstraction that I find compelling. Implications of form, color and surface inspire meaning in the work. In the studio or in the gallery, to be lost is to be present, and I believe in the transformative power that color imbues.”
Chance, play and uncertainty are key aspects of Karlovec’s reactionary process. Karlovec expounds, “Each mark, line and gesture determines the next. The impetus of my work is to respond to and build upon the visual language of pure abstraction. My paintings are about paintings. My drawings are about drawings. Pure abstraction with no recognizable signifier functions as a device for me to keep the viewer fixed within a singular moment. This is what compels me to create.”
An opening reception for Impulse Painting takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20 during Third Friday at 78th Street Studios. The exhibition remains on view for Third Friday in February (Feb. 17). Immediately following both receptions, local musician and co-founder of Survival Kit Brian Straw presents free performances by local bands and musicians in the gallery.
PopEye Gallery is located in Suite 303 on the third floor of 78th Street Studios. As always, all Third Friday events are free and open to the public. For more information about PopEye Gallery, visit popeyegallery.com. For more info on Joseph Karlovec and his work, visit joekarlovec.com.
