PopEye Gallery proudly presents Gods and Fighting Men new work by Kaetlyn McCafferty in our first solo exhibition of 2018. McCafferty received a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2012 with a major in Drawing and minor in Photography. Growing up in a family of Irish and Prussian immigrants, her life has been imbued with folklore, stories, and cultural struggles that play prominent roles in her practice. She works primarily in wet media, creating drawings that explore the places between those personal elements and larger societal anxieties. Her work has been shown throughout Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Miami and Ireland. When not in the studio, you can find her hiking with her dog, playing the fiddle, or teaching Irish language classes
Gods and Fighting Men is the first exhibition of McCafferty latest Figurative illustrations, these drawings employ myth and archetype to reflect on personal and social anxieties. Collaged together in a series of tableaus, figures engage in an array of obscure activities and relationships inspired by literature, myth, and observations. References to theatre and photography highlight our tendencies to understand our environments as constructions, and exercise our identities as performances. The resulting work explores the role of mythology within our psychology; how we construct narratives which both help and hinder us in moving through a tumultuous social climate and navigating complex value systems. Ultimately, they point to the absurdity in attempting to establish stable meaning and order in a constantly shifting world.
An opening reception for Gods and Fighting Men takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 16th during Third Friday at 78th Street Studios. The exhibition remains on view for Third Friday in April (Apr. 20). Immediately following both receptions, local musician and co-founder of Survival Kit Brian Straw presents free performances by local bands and musicians in the gallery.
PopEye Gallery is located in Suite 303 on the third floor of 78th Street Studios. As always, all Third Friday events are free and open to the public.
